Fireworks Cause Devastating Fallout At Animal Shelters

Fireworks terrify dogs who have been known to jump over 10 foot fences or go right through locked windows or doors in their panic. Many wind up lost, in shelters, or get hit by a car.
MuttShack Foundation for Animal Rescue and Animal Foster warn that if you are taking your dog with you on July 4th, to a picnic or friend's house or outing, to keep that dog secured at all times.
“Last year three dogs I know have got out while visiting in friend's yards. The dogs were in strange neighborhoods and couldn't find their way back since they didn't live there,” said one rescuer.
MuttShack Animal Rescue's advice for handling your dogs:
· Keep TWO secure collars and two leashes on the dog. One regular collar and one chain, both with ID tags. A terrified dog can bolt with the strength of Hercules and snap a collar or twist out of them if someone is holding them.
· Make sure the dog's ID is current and intact. If you don't have an engraved ID tag from the store, get a tag off your luggage, and write your information on it. (It's not that silly if you consider you may never see him again if he gets lost).
· If your dog is microchipped, make sure your registration is current online.
· Make sure you have a recent picture available of your dog so that if he gets out you can make flyers and Internet notices immediately.
· If you are going out and leaving the dog at home, leave on the TV or radio to help drown out the noise.
· Occupy him with a chew-bone.
· Make sure the dog is secure. If you can crate the dog, do so.
· If your dog suffers from anxiety, give him a mild natural sedative like Bachs.
· Make sure all your gates and fences are LOCKED. Mischief-makers think it is fun to open gates.
· Even if you are home, keep a close watch on your dogs.
Volunteer at a local shelter after July 4. Most shelters only hold animals for three days before they are put down. Anything you can do to help find the dog's owners, or find him a new home will save a life.

About Muttshack:
Muttshack Foundation is a 501((c)3) non-profit, a project of the National Heritage Foundation, established in 1968. MuttShack Foster and Animal Rescue promotes the education and creation of foster homes for abandoned and abused animals.
Muttshackers rescue animals from shelters, and from the streets, rehabilitate and nurture them to health in homes (MuttShacks) and find them quality, permanent new families.
By intervening and rescuing shelter animals about to be put to sleep, MuttShack fostering stops the senseless killing of healthy animals in overcrowded shelters.
