Amazing! Gravity Defying!
These best describe the performance of the Yankee Flyers Dog Club! On Saturday, August 21, 2004 at the Animal Planet Expo held on the Flourtown Picnic Grounds at Fort Washington State Park, Pa., these incredible canines showed their stuff in the center arena!
Club President, Gail Mirabella, delighted the crowd by telling each dog's own personal story as she put them through their moves. First up was Bandit, a Border Collie, who is a rescue dog and has permanent steel pins in his back leg. The crowd cheered, as he seemed to float in mid air to catch the Frisbees tossed for him.
Next up was handler Janie Harris with her Border Collie, Bailey. Music played and Bailey wove herself in and out of Janie's legs in perfect step with the music.
Next was the vertically challenged, but very energetic, Annabelle, a Welsh Corgi. Annabelle was tireless as she and her handler, Tony Mirabella, demonstrated the proper way to teach your dog to fetch a Frisbee.
There was an audience participation part of the show that featured Gail and her dog, Jet, another Border Collie. Gail looked through the crowd surrounding the center ring and chose two volunteers. Sammie, 7 years old and Josh, 5 1/2, were the lucky ones chosen each getting a shot at throwing a Frisbee for Jet.
The last dog to perform was a 5 year old Australian Shepard named, Dasher. Dasher's handler, Ed Jakubowski, guided him through a spectacular display of gravity defying leaps and catches!
The Yankee Flyers Club was founded in 1999 by Gail Miribella and Ed Jakubowski. Gail is also a member of the Purina Incredible Dog Team and performs for them regularly. Many of the dogs in the club are from rescue organizations. Gail's thoughtful approach stressed the importance of supporting these organizations to the crowd throughout the show.
The Yankee Flyers Club will be performing next at the Philadelphia Kennel Club in November at the Fort Washing Expo Center. They are the featured entertainment this year. For more information about this event please click
