Keep Your Pets Happy and Safe This Holiday Season

If you're wondering how you can include your furry friends in the holiday festivities you aren't alone! A survey by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) found that a whopping 67 percent of pet owners include their pets in holiday celebrations.

"Pets can be a joyful addition to your holiday celebrations but there are certain potential pet hazards that come with the season," says Daniel S. Aja, DVM, AAHA president. "Once you are aware of these hazards, a few precautions can make the holidays a happy time for both the two-legged and four-legged members of your family."

The holidays are a time for giving, and you may be tempted to share your holiday feast with your furry friends. However, turkey or ham bones can lodge in your pet's throat, stomach and intestinal tract. Fats, gravies, and poultry skin can cause severe gastrointestinal problems. Rather, buy treats specifically made for your kind of pet. If you want to give him a human treat, stick to fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli or green beans.

Trimming the Christmas tree is a fun, family activity but make sure to keep curious pups and kitties safe by securing the top of the tree to a wall. Sharp or breakable tree ornaments, yarns, ribbons, angel hair and tinsel should be hung high on the tree out of your pet's reach, and pine needles should be promptly cleaned up. Likewise, poisonous plants such as holly, mistletoe and poinsettias, and electrical cords and holiday lights should be secured out of reach. Giving animals pet-safe toys will keep them occupied and an appropriate amount of exercise, depending on their physical condition, will wear them out so they will be less likely to get into mischief.
