The Humane Society of the United States Sends Memorial Day Donation to Disabled Vet Struggling to Help His Dog

The Humane Society of the United States is honoring a U.S. Army veteran by contributing $1000 to fund essential surgery for his dog.
Richard Reister of Chesaning, Mich. served his country for almost 20 years until he became disabled and had trouble walking. His companion, a mixed breed dog named David who helps him get around, is in need of an $8000 surgical procedure to correct a hip deformity. Although he is disabled, Reister is offering to mow lawns for $10 each to raise money for his dog.
"When The Humane Society of the United States saw Richard's story, we knew that we had to step in and help," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "There is no greater way to celebrate the courage of this veteran who is giving his all for his best friend."
