Celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month(R) with These Tips from the American Humane

Many people recall the dog they had growing up as a kid. Fond memories of games of fetch and exuberant displays of affection when you got home from school round out your recollection of your best friend. He was a mutt, but he was perfect.

The American Humane Association will celebrate its Adopt-A-Dog Month(R) this October and urges you to find that "perfect dog" again at your local shelter. Adopt-A-Dog Month is a nationally recognized event that reminds everyone to do their part against pet overpopulation by adopting their next canine companion from an animal shelter or breed rescue group.

Millions of unwanted puppies are born in the United States each year and many end up at animal shelters.

However, you can help by celebrating Adopt-A-Dog Month with American Humane. Whether you choose to rescue a dog or improve the lives of the dogs in your community by volunteering, you'll make tails wag this October.

Here's how you can celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month:

Adopt locally

When you're ready to open your heart and home to a new pooch, adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue group. Talk with shelter staff to find the perfect dog for you, and remember -- older dogs make excellent friends too!

Spay or neuter your pup

The best way to combat pet overpopulation is to have your pup spayed or neutered, thus preventing the possibility of unexpected -- and potentially unwanted -- puppies. Spayed and neutered animals have also been shown to lead longer, healthier lives, and tend to avoid certain behavioral problems common in animals that haven't been spayed or neutered.

ID your pet

By putting identification on your pet, either in the form of a tag, a microchip or both, you will reduce the possibility that Fido will become one of the presumably "homeless" dogs at your local shelter. Only 15-20 percent of dogs who enter a shelter are reunited with their owners; make sure your dog is one of the happy few by outfitting him with proper identification!

Donate to your local shelter

Show the dogs at your local shelter or rescue group that you care by giving a donation. A donation can be money, time spent volunteering, or supplies like dog food, leashes, beds and toys. Call the shelter to see what supplies they need most. Even the smallest donation can make a difference.
