North Shore Animal League America Declares DOGust the First as Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs

Pet lovers at North Shore Animal League America acknowledge that the actual birth dates of most rescue dogs are unknown. To give these wonderful animals their much deserved recognition, the Animal League will be declaring the first day of the eighth month of 2008 (August 1) as DOGust the First, a universal birthday for shelter and rescue dogs everywhere.
Many pet parents are known to select a random date to celebrate their adopted dog's birthday, such as a significant occasion, a family member's birthday, a special holiday that reflects the dog's personality, or in many cases, the date on which they adopted the animal. Now, pet owners can truly designate a celebratory date with the unveiling of DOGust the First.
In addition, dog lovers nationwide will be able to actively participate in the DOGust the First celebration by expressing their birthday wishes for their own pets, or even a family member's or a neighbor's rescued pet, with a specially designed Happy DOGust the First e-card greeting. The greetings, with three colorful designs to choose from, can be sent from the Animal League's website, AnimalLeague.org.
Beth Ostrosky, Animal League spokesperson, and a pet parent to her own Bianca, says that while often times the ages of rescued dogs are identifiable, we don't know their true birth dates.
“A birthday celebration is an opportunity to express our sentiments for one another. These wonderful animals, many still waiting patiently in shelters for their adopters, are so full of life and love, and live to please us,” said Ms. Ostrosky, adding “Now we have a day set aside to honor them and return the unconditional love and adoration they give us, day after day. These sweet animals crave our affection and company, so we can imagine the warm feelings they will experience from all the extra attention on their special day, DOGust the First.”
