Grissom Finds A Loving Home!

On a cloudy and drizzly day, I received a phone call at my desk from one of my coworker's. “One of the puppies has come back, do you want him?” she asked. A month ago Connie had called me about three puppies that had wandered into her yard. They were strays, which are unfortunately a typical occurrence in that town. I was prepared to take all three, but they mysteriously disappeared the afternoon I planned to get them.
“Yes! I'll stop by after work! Do you have a crate? Put him in a crate until I get there this time!” I was pretty excited. I had no plans on keeping him, but it was important to me that I find him a good home. There are so many strays running around in the town where I work and this would make the second puppy that I have successfully found a home for. I called my husband to tell him what I was bringing home.
I got off work at 4:30pm and I arrived at Connie's house at 4:40pm. There he was. He was all curled up in the crate, wet and sad. It had been drizzling rain all day and my heart sank at the sight of him. Connie's boyfriend carried the crate to my car and we set off for home.
On the way home, which is a 45 minute drive, the little guy vomited inside the crate. Boy did it reek! At a stop light I got a closer look at what he threw up. It was a ball that seemed to consist of aluminum foil, straw and small bits of plastic. He was swooning and I thought he'd get sick again, but he didn't. Fortunately I had already made an appointment for him at our family vet for the very next day.
We arrived home and my husband, Tommy, came out to meet us. “Hi, little man!” he said softly. “You're gonna be just fine, you'll see.”
The first thing we did before we brought him in was lock our two little dogs, Daisy and Scooby in the bedroom. They would meet the puppy later. Next, we gave the little guy a bath. He wasn't too happy about it, but we think he felt better when we were done.
Tommy wrapped him up in a dry fluffy towel and sat in the chair holding him while I fixed him some dinner. I boiled some hamburger and drained off the grease and mixed in some baby rice cereal. He ate it all and looked to me for more!
After dinner it was time to meet the other doggies. Needless to say they were not too happy about the visitor!
We decided to temporarily name the puppy Grissom, after a character in Tommy's favorite T.V. show, CSI. We had to call him something even though we knew we wouldn't be able to keep him.
The next day, the vet confirmed what we thought Grissom was. He is a cross between a Labrador and a Pit Bull Terrier. This mix, especially Pit Bull's, is very common in the area where I work. Grissom weighed in at 10 pounds, exactly. Aside from two types of worms, he seemed to be in good health, too. I left my home and work number at the desk of the vet's office, hoping someone would call me and be interested in adopting him.
The next day my hopes were answered! I received a call at work from a woman who had just moved into a new house with her husband. Her name is Deanne and she explained that they had been looking for a puppy in the local shelters, but could not find what they were looking for. A friend of hers was at the vet's office the day I brought Grissom and she heard me telling one of the technicians about him. We spoke some more and she told me about their home which has a fenced in backyard. They sounded like the perfect family for Grissom!
We agreed that Tommy and I would bring Grissom to her that Friday night.
The next couple of nights we pretty much spoiled the little guy. We played with him and took him for walks. He also slept in the bed with us for the three nights we had him. He was a natural snuggler, too!
Friday night came too soon and we drove Grissom to his new home. Deanne greeted him with kisses and new toys! We stayed for a short while and then decided it was time to go. I walked out the door first and didn't look back. I didn't want to see him trying to follow us out the door. We were the only love and comfort that he experienced up till that moment and it was hard to let him go.
We asked Deanne to create a webpage on our website when she had a chance. We hope she will update the photos so we can watch him grow into the great companion we know he's destined to be!
We love you and miss you, little buddy! Thank you, Deanne! Please take good care of our special little guy!
