Strolling Through The Park

It was a perfect day for a walk in the park with your best four legged pal! Equally perfect was the opportunity to support a worthy cause while you walked. On a gorgeous autumn day, the Animal Adoption Center had their annual Dog Walk in Haddon Heights Park, Haddon Heights, NJ.
Roughly 300 registrants and their furry friends came out to support the only No Kill Shelter in South Jersey, which is located on Berlin Avenue in Lindenwold, New Jersey. There were individual vendors such as Jakes Dog House along with pet psychics. “Every cent goes toward the care of the animals in the shelter,” explained John Levins, Vice President of the Board of Volunteers for the shelter. The Board consists of volunteers whose only payment is the satisfaction of helping abused or neglected dogs and cats that come through their shelter. Levin went on to explain that each volunteer that works at the shelter must pass through a strict training process before they even come into contact with the animals. “We currently have around 40 dogs and 60 cats, but those numbers are constantly changing,” Levin's added, “we rely solely on donations. We do not receive any State or Federal Aid.” John went on to tell a touching story of compassion. A member of the Animal Adoption Center happened upon a small dog which was being lodged in another shelter. The dog, later named Toby, had a severely injured paw. The member brought the dog to the Animal Adoption Center. Toby ended up needing his leg amputated and one of the Board members paid for his veterinary fees out of pocket. The Board member went on to adopt Toby and he now lives a happy and healthy life. (Toby was present at the Dog Walk and can be seen in the photo gallery)
It is wonderfully apparent how much the members of the No-Kill facility care about the dogs. Everywhere throughout the event you could find a member wearing a bright yellow shirt and an equally bright smile! Most had furry friends with them who wore signs that read, “Please Adopt Me!” All where ready to answer questions or simply talk about the special little soul that they were trying to help find a forever home.
The event was an excellent opportunity to network with caring and compassionate people who all share the same focus and mission. Participants came from all over South Jersey. Some, like Kathleen Leary and Cindy Corcorin, have their own rescue operations. Theirs, The Mid Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League,
www.magdrl.org, boasts 115 dogs currently in foster care. This organization relies on donations and volunteers to foster abused and neglected animals.
The Animal Adoption Center will be hosting more events to benefit the No-Kill shelter. Come out and bring your four legged to share in the fun! Please visit their website at
